Balancing Family Life

Last weekend, I had another walking date with my friend as part of our continued commitment to have regular scenic walk catch-ups.

We were keen on doing this new walk but unfortunately, the new Maroubra walk once again eluded us. This time, it was closed off due to a rifle shooting event.

Nevertheless, we had another wonderful day as we chatted and walked along the coast lined with vibrant deep blue water which glistened in the sun. It was a gorgeous sunny day and we definitely made the most of it.


This time instead of just walking, we picked some pretty peaceful spots along the way to also sit and admire the scenery. One of the spots had this amazing rock pool with crystal clear water where you could see right through the bottom. The transparent water revealed a bed seaweed and pretty patterned small fish swimming around. I was intrigued. I couldn’t help myself. I took off my shoes, rolled up my tights and dipped my legs in the pool. It was so refreshing – highlight of my day!.


Later on, we sat on a cliff edge with only ocean in front of us as far as we could see. I thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility that the scenery provided.

At the end of the day, I was so very grateful for spending this day out with my good friend and doing what I really enjoy – time in nature. Not to forget, having a good hearty chat about our daily struggles in life and some laughter along the way is a great therapy in itself.

It is so important for us all to take the time out for yourself to do what makes you feel happy. You could do that with a friend or spend that quality time with yourself.


In a fast paced world, it is not easy to find that valuable time to take a break and truly relax. It is even more challenging when you have a young family. There is always never-ending chores inside and outside home and we get caught up in a vicious cycle of work work work and no play. At least that what it feels like for me.

However, taking this vital time out to take care of ourselves is needed to recharge and for our overall well-being. Next weekend, my husband will have his ME time out and spend the day doing what he loves while I baby sit. It is the best thing for his mental health and well-being.

As I yoga teacher, I’m always talking about balance. Balance within our-self and in life is something we all need for our health and happiness. For all us busy parents, let’s make balancing the self with the family life a priority. I read today that even Buddha insisted that he have one hour completely to himself everyday.

When was the last time you took the time out to enjoy doing what you love or take a good relaxing break?.
