Newcastle – A better than expected short break

It has been a long time since I have been to Newcastle. As a kid I don’t remember it being that great. Let’s just say I wasn’t over the moon when we recently decided to take a short break to Newcastle. However, being only 2.5 hours away from Sydney, it is closer coastal getaway compared to most places we know.

Once we got there, to my surprise, the city has changed heaps. It has been revamped with many new buildings and houses and has a ‘posh’ look about it now. I was pleasantly surprised especially at the new walkway that allows you to walk along the beautiful ocean with pretty amazing views. You can also hire a bike and cycle the whole path which goes around the pier. My plan for next time.

The main reason we wanted to go to this city was to go 4wding on Stockton beach. Unfortunately, it is the only beach closest to home where we can take our 4wd on the beach. I love the sand dunes there which makes for a good play with or without the 4wd.

We rented an apartment there for a night even though what we really wanted to do was to camp on/near the beach but it is not allowed. Once we checked in, we bought some fresh seafood and headed straight to Stockton beach where we cooked and enjoyed a delicious seafood beach overlooking the ocean and watched the sun set. Me and my little one even had a good dance. It was one of those special, amazing experiences that you don’t get to have often.

The next day we only had the morning, so we took the little one to the kids bath near Nobby’s beach. I decided to go for a run along the walkway while hubby watched the bub. It was a very hot day but I kept on running because of the stunning views which kept enticing me to go further and further. I turned back once I got to the cliff walk (a war memorial) which had spectacular views (as per my photos). I had a dip in the ocean afterwards to cool off – super refreshing after a hot run.

We then headed to this famous ice-cream shop called Popolo Artisan Gelateria which has been rated quite high. Now I am fussy with my ice-cream, but I was WOWed with the icecream here. They make is fresh and daily without any chemicals. I am definitely coming back to this place and trying other flavours.

After thoroughly enjoying the ice-cream and the short break, it was time to head back to Sydney. We returned home more than satisfied in our tummy (physically), mentally (de-stressed) and spiritually (ocean always uplifts my soul).

What were your best short getaways?
